Use of Scissors

Material:

• Small, well-crafted scissors with sharp points
• A collection of old greeting cards of post cards with borders that can be trimmed. Include cards with curved borders as well as those with square or rectangular borders.
• Simple shapes from the insets for design can also be traced on index card stock.

Presentation:

Show the child how to place middle finger and thumb in the holes of the scissors and to hold the scissors with the blades at right angles to the paper. Demonstrate how to cut along the border of the card.

Exercise 1: The child cuts the square or rectangular borders from cards.

Exercise 2: The child cuts along curved borders of cards.

The children enjoy recycling the greeting card designs by mounting them on construction paper and making their own cards.
